President's

Message

Guy J. Tommasi, Jr., President, Guilford Rotary Club

Welcome to the Guilford Rotary website. You are about to start on a amazing journey to see exactly what this dynamic club has done and will continue to do in serving our community locally, regionally, and worldwide. We are part of Rotary International, a global service organization whose purpose is to provide humanitarian services and to advance good will and peace in our communities and around the world.

We have four major fundraisers during the year; Lobsterfest in June, the Silent Auction at Lobsterfest, the Rose Sale in October and the Frosty 5K on New Year’s Day. The funds we raise go to local, regional, and international charities including The Guilford Food Bank, The Guilford Fair Parade, Raise the Roof (Habitat for Humanity), New Reach (the largest provider of shelter in CT for women and children), Christmas Senior Luncheon, Guilford Interfaith Ministries, Read to Grow program, Haitian Health Foundation, Warm the Children (buying winter clothes for needy children), and cooking and serving at the Community Dining Room (a Branford based soup kitchen that serves the shoreline). You can find a complete listing on our projects page.

The theme for this Rotary year is “Be The Inspiration.” It is our hope that you will be inspired to be part of the Guilford Rotary in continuing to improve the lives of others through service – while having fun at the same time.

Thank you for visiting our website. Please consider this my personal invitation to attend one of our weekly meetings as my guest. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Guy J. Tommasi, Jr

Hurricane devastates Haiti, we pack 28,000 meals

and get them on the ground in Jeremie

On October 4, 2016, Hurricane Matthew made landfall on Haiti's Tiberon Peninsula as a category 4 storm. It devastated the area around the Haitian Health Foundation in Jeremie, stalling international aid for nearly a year. On March 24, 2018, six shoreline Rotary clubs gathered at First Congregational Church in Madison to pack 28,000 meals for shipment to the Foundation. The Rotary Clubs raised $3,500 (plus a matching District grant grant of $3,500) and partnered with The Outreach Program, a non-profit that organizes food packing events around the country. Bill Stableford (above) helped organize this remarkable event.

Warm the Children: Our 21st year helping local families obtain winter clothing

As cold weather approaches, Madison Rotary Club, Guilford Rotary Club and the ShoreLine Times newspaper are again providing funds and volunteers to take families shoping for warm clothing for their kids. Last year, more than $16,000 was raised and as a result 172 children living in Madison and Guilford received new winter clothing. We expect a similar level of participation this year.

To participate, families in Guilford and Madison contact their local welfare agencies. Madison families then are contacted by Guilford Rotarians to assist them in shopping at Wal-Mart. Likewise, Guilford families are assisted by Madison Rotarians.

For more information about participation in the program or about making a cash donation, contact Larry Appleton, Guilford Rotary Club Warm the Children Chair - (203) 457-1571, or send a message through Contact Us.

We Donate $1,000 to A. W. Cox School Project

 Renovation of existing shed

will provide protected area for playscape

Guilford Rotary awards check to Cox School

Guy Tommasi, Jr., president of the Guilford Rotary Club (center) recently presented a $1,000 check to Cox School Principal Peter Fragols, Jyl Lozier-oman LCSW, Noemi Kearns and Anne Hartford. "There are currently no protected playscapes in the Guilford community that allow for play during inclement weather," Tommasi said. "The renovation of the A.W. Cox Shed will provide outdoor opportunities for the entire community, not just for A.W.  Cox School. This shed renovation will allow children to further develop their social, emotional, physical, and cognitive skills. It can also be used by community organizations and groups for team-building, creativity and problem-solving."

Honey for Haiti

Nicholas Hunsaker, an alumn of the Guilford High School Interact Club (and now at Providence College), put together a partnership between a Haitian orphanage and several U.S. green companies, including Connecticut honey producers. His new nonprofit organization - Honey For Haiti - raises money through the sale of products here in the U.S. The orphanage is using this seed capital to grow its own food, drill a well for clean water, and make use of renewable energy resources.
